bachi da pietra (stoneworms)

"Something in the insect seems to be alien to the habits, morals, and psychology of this world, as if it had come from some other planet: more monstrous, more energetic, more insensate, more atrocious, more infernal than our own." — Maurice Maeterlinck (1862–1949)

Insects were the earliest organisms to produce sounds and to sense them. Soundmaking in insects is achieved mostly by mechanical action of appendages. Most soundmaking insects also have tympanal organs that can perceive airborne sounds. Most insects are also able to sense vibrations transmitted by the substrate. There are a variety of different mechanisms by which insects perceive sound; the general pattern, however, is that if an insect can produce sound, then it can also hear sound. Stoneworms hear and produce sound. Sometimes they put theyr sound on records to share it with you.
